If you are 64 and have been or will be receiving Social Security Benefits at least 4 months before turning 65, Good news, you will automatically be enrolled in Medicare!

CAUTION

If you are automatically enrolled in Medicare - you will be enrolled in both Part A and Part B.  If you have large group coverage that qualifies as "creditable coverage" you may want to delay coverage by following instructions in your welcome packet and returning your Medicare Card. You will then be issued a new card  with Part A Hospital Coverage only.

You may receive calls or have insurance agents that work with Medicare beneficiaries tell you the sky is falling if you are 64 and 6 months and haven't made Medicare decisions.  Beware of anyone who uses scare tactics to get you to make a hasty decision.  

If you are 64, qualify for Medicare at age 65, and need both Part A and Part B of Medicare, your initial enrollment period is the 3 months before, the month of and the three months after your birthday.  There are several ways to sign up:

I am 64 and just need Part A

I am 64 and not collecting Social Security Retirement Benefits

I am 65 or older and I now need Part B

If you are collecting Social Security Retirement Benefits, qualify for Medicare at age 65, and only need Part A, please see the caution under the "I am 64 and collecting Social Security"  section on this page.  If you are 64, qualify for Medicare at age 65, are not receiving retirement benefits and only need part A, please see the enrollment options below.  All three options will allow you to communicate that you wish to sign up for Part A only.

 PLEASE NOTE:

Your enrollment period for Part A starts 3 months before you turn 65 with the effective date being the first of the month of the month you turn 65 (unless you are born on the 1st of the month, then it starts a month earlier).

If you apply for Part A any month after your birthday month, the coverage effective date will be retroactive up to 6 months but not earlier than the first month you were eligible.

Good news, If you are receiving disability benefits you are automatically enrolled in Medicare your 25th month of receiving disability payments.  Certain conditions allow for Medicare benefits to start the very first month of diagnosis.
